Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System (SRIS): Benefits for Member States, Benefits for Collaboration between International Organizations

All IAEA Member States make use of nuclear technology, to deliver benefits (in science, medicine, agriculture, industry, and electricity). As with any process, this results in some amount of waste, in this case – radioactive waste. To manage this radioactive waste most effectively, a Member State must have a clear understanding of their full national inventory. Since 2002 the Member States were able to use Net Enabled Waste Management Database for reporting their radioactive waste inventories. (NEWMDB). In 2020 it was replaced by Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System (SRIS). Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System contains information on national radioactive waste management programmes, radioactive waste inventories and radioactive waste disposal, as well as relevant laws and regulations, waste management policies, and plans and activities. SRIS is based on the inventory parameter set agreed by international organizations – IAEA, EC and OECD NEA, covering all major reporting requirements with the possibility of inclusion of other reporting formats. After attending this webinar, participants will be able to: • Understand the importance of spent fuel and radioactive waste inventory in the planning of the safe management • Understand the advantages of using Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System • Find information from public web pages of the Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Information System and other trusted sources Moderators: Rebecca Robbins and Merle Lust, both IAEA; Panelists: James Woodfield, NDA, UK; Vaidas Matuzas, Joint Research Centre, The European Commission; Emilio Garcia Neri, ENRESA, chairman of the project Status and Trends in Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Management
